Secret Door The Throne / "Sado" Actors Song and Han to portray Joseon's King Yeongjo in upcoming drama and film Actor Song Kang-ho in a scene from 2013 film, "The Face Reader" / Korea Times files Actor Han Suk-kyu in a scene from 2011 SBS TV drama, "Deep Rooted Tree" By Baek Byung-yeul A king puts his son to death by imprisoning him into wooden rice chest for eight days, and an 11-year-old grandson witnesses the death of his father who is suffering a mental illness. He later succeeds to the throne following his grandfather and holds an eight-day-long parade to cherish the memory of his deceased father. The seemingly fanciful story actually happened about 250 years ago when the Korean Peninsula was under the rule of Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). Also it is probably one of the most familiar historic events for Koreans as numerous dramas and films continuously have shed light on it. For example, in the recent past there were MBC TV's 2008 drama "Yi San" and "The Fatal Encounter," a movie released this year. Both focused on the grandson, King Jeongjo and enjoyed tremendous popularity. And this fall, historical drama fans will be aroused again as two works reproducing this tragic story are ready to meet fans through small and big screens, starring renowned actors Song Kang-ho, 47, and Han Suk-kyu, 49, as the grandfather, King Yeongjo. Song, arguably one of the country's most influential actors with a slew of hits, will portray King Yeongjo in upcoming film, "Sado." As Song's counterpart, actor Yoo Ah-in, 27, will feature as his son, crown prince Sado. The Film's director Lee Jun-ik, who's best known for "King And The Clown" (2005) and "Hope" (2013), said that he will "revisit the historic incident in a new way." "The historic figures cannot exist alone. We cannot exclude King Yeongjo when explaining about crown prince Sado and vise versa. With Sado as the main subject, my film will take an unconventional approach in explaining why the king had to put his son to death," Lee said to reporters after finishing the first day of the shooting in Namwon, North Jeolla Province. "Sado" will be released later this year. Before the premiere of "Sado," fans will meet another actor playing King Yeongjo in September. Han, who overwhelmed cinema scene in 1990's with numerous hits such as "The Ginko Bed" (1996), "Christmas in August" (1998) and "Swiri" (1999), will feature as King Yeongjo in SBS TV's drama, "Secret Door." Expectation toward Han is higher than ever as he already wowed the audiences in 2011 SBS drama, "Deep Rooted Tree," in which he showed outstanding performance by playing King Sejong, Joseon's fourth king and inventor of the Korean alphabet, "Hangeul." Actor Lee Je-hoon, 30, who will be discharged from the Army this month, will take a role of Sado. He performed together with Han, as a student and a teacher in 2012 film, "My Paparotti." SBS said the upcoming drama will "more pay attention to the conflicted relationship of father and son, not the death of son." Culture critic Bae Kook-nam said that the reason why more historic periods have kept shedding light on this historical event is that it has an "overwhelming storyline." "This is one of the most widely known histories, even to an elementary student. With the ease of accessibility as a base, creators can have room to shape this into interesting story more easily than other historic events," Bae said. Bae added that it would be interesting for fans to compare upcoming drama and film with previous works. "The forthcoming works take a different direction from the past historical pieces, dealing with crown prince Sado because both claim that they will attempt to reinterpret King Yeongjo. "King Yeongjo has usually been depicted as a cruel-hearted father, who made his son starve to death in many dramas," the critic said. "But historians say the incident of Sado's death was intertwined with complex partisan interests so that even the king couldn't untangle. Yoo Ah In donates lunch and child care facilities.

Actor Yoo Ah In has quietly donated KRW 77 million (about $71,160) from his personal account to child’s school lunches and care facilities through The Beautiful Foundation Korea. The Beautiful Foundation general secretary told reporter today, “Mr. Yoo Ah In contacted us yesterday by writing an email from his current filming location, telling us that he has transferred 77 million Won from Busan.”

The Beautiful Foundation also published Yoo Ah In’s complete letter that he emailed yesterday, 28th January 2013, on their official website.

Yoo Ah In : Punch

The new film “Punch” does not have an exciting story line, a swirling climax nor a vengeful villain at its center. But it does have the talents of an engaging young actor named Yoo Ah-in, who appears to have lost a bit of his boyish arrogance and is entering a new, more serious phase of his career. 

The film, which was released yesterday, is based on Kim Ryeo-ryeong’s novel “Wan-deuk-i,” which has sold more than 700,000 copies in the three years since it was published in 2008.

It was directed by Lee Han, who previously helmed such works as “Lover’s Concerto” (2002) and “Almost Love” (2006).

Like the novel, the film is a coming-of-age story that revolves around a multiethnic family facing dire circumstances. 

At the beginning of the film, Wan-deuk is in his second year of high school. Although he is not a good student and gets terrible grades, he is a good fighter and knows how to defend himself. 

He lives with his father, who is disabled, and the two are in living in extreme poverty. Wan-deuk has been able to endure his situation until now, but he is brought to the point of snapping when he learns of a long-held family secret: the mother who ran out on the two of them years ago is Filipino.

“Wan-deuk is a timid and mature, yet rebellious child. He’s an outsider, but he doesn’t try to leave the nest,” Yoo explains. “But it’s not like my character loses his mind or becomes disturbed when he discovers the secret about his past. I think I turned Wan-deuk into a much nicer kid compared to who he is in the novel.”

Yoo said the story moved him so much that he was brought to tears.

“I’ve lost count of how many times I cried,” he said. “The scenes of Wan-deuk carrying his father, a man half his size, on his back, and of his meeting with his long-lost mother were the most touching. It was moments like these that made me realize how grown up Wan-deuk is and I felt a lot of sympathy for him. He is the nicest kid in the world.”

Putting his hand to his chest, he said, “It still hurts here whenever I think about him.”

At its heart, the film focuses on the relationship between Wan-deuk and his homeroom teacher, Dong-ju. Although the two start the film bickering and fighting constantly as though they were enemies, circumstances force them together and they soon become like family to one another. 

Yoo and Kim Yoon-seok, who plays Dong-ju, keep the emotional plot alive and could not have done more justice to their roles. They and the rest of the cast do a fine job of weaving a web of mirth and laughter to counter the film’s complex and somber plot line.

It is easy to see why Yoo was able to play young Wan-deuk, even though he is seven years older than his character.

“I guess my baby face was an advantage,” Yoo said. 

He said that he also did his own research, talking with younger actors on set to learn about what high school students of today think about and go through. 

Still, he said he was careful “not to make Wan-deuk stand out or look too cool on screen.”

Yoo made his debut in the KBS drama “Sharp 1” in 2003, getting his first taste of fame. After appearing in a string of unconventional movies, he spent a lot of time out of the limelight and said he began to “crave fame like crazy.”

He got his wish last year with a role in the popular drama “Sungkyungkwan Scandal.” His role as one of the four main characters gave him plenty of opportunities to live the celebrity life and feel the adoration of his fans.

But he said the drama also taught him a valuable lesson about his craft.

“There was a time when I used to be stubborn and would say to myself, ‘I’m an artist; I’ll act as I please,’” he said. “I had no love for TV dramas, and when I was shooting ‘Chilwu, the Mighty’ [in 2008] I even told the manager off, saying, ‘After this, I’m never shooting a drama again.’”

Yoo said, “I was stuck in an ‘I’m only acting to act’ phase, but after ‘Sungkyungkwan Scandal’ I became a more flexible actor.”
